The liripipe hood originated in the 13th century, presumably also earlier in some places and became one of the features of medieval fashion. It then gradually dropped out of the high-fashion stratum but remained a ubiquitous and practical piece of clothing among commoners, traders, and country folk well into the late Middle Ages.
