Simple Pilgrim Hood

A Two-for-One Medieval Clothing Classic

The Simple Liripipe Hood is both practical and stylish medieval headwear, providing the utility of a hood with the cosmetic benefit of a chaperon. Constructed from sturdy wool with a cotton inner lining to provide comfort, it's cut to move easily over the shoulders while offering warmth and protection for your head. From keeping out a gusty fairground to completing your character costume, the item is both functional and stylish.

This hood is part of Epic Armoury's Yoremade line, dedicated to historical accuracy and everyday wearability. Its integral deep hood and dramatic 152 cm liripipe, from crown to tail, adds a touch of drama to any medieval style, without pretentiousness or being in the way.

Based on 13th to 15th Century Fashion

The liripipe hood originated in the 13th century, presumably also earlier in some places and became one of the features of medieval fashion. It was most popular in the 14th and early 15th centuries and was worn by nobles, burgesses, and craftsmen. It then gradually dropped out of the high-fashion stratum but remained a ubiquitous and practical piece of clothing among commoners, traders, and country folk well into the late Middle Ages.

That period encompasses the entire lifespan, from high-fashion headgear to everyday use. Whether employed as a hood or dressed up as a chaperon, you can switch between character types and social classes easily, always within period.

Practical Features for Everyday Use

• Wool exterior, cotton lining: Warm, breathable, and soft against the skin, ideal for long days outdoors or indoors.
• Long liripipe tail (152 cm): Adds character and movement to your look, whether trailing freely or wrapped in place.
• Broad shoulder drape: Offers additional warmth and sits neatly over tunics, cloaks, or surcoats.
• Double styling: Wear it as a classic medieval hood or twist it into a chaperon for a different silhouette.
• One size fits most: Simple and forgiving in fit, it works well with most head and shoulder sizes.
• This liripipe hood doesn’t need embellishment to make its mark, it lets the shape, fabric, and function speak for themselves.

A Trusty Addition to Your Kit

The Simple Liripipe Hood belongs comfortably draped over almost anything: monk's habit and peasant tunics or rich doublets or cloaks. Whether depicting a wanderer on a misty dawn or simply trying to keep ears warm on night watch, it provides a splash of weight, warmth, and character to your look.

Its subtle authenticity makes it perfect for LARP, reenactment, faire-going, or costumed storytelling. It’s the kind of medieval hood you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again, not just for what it does, but for how easily it becomes part of the character you’re building.

The hood is simple. But it does the job beautifully.

The way the human children look at you, you would assume they have never seen an elf before. Granted, it isn’t often that you travel into cities. You prefer the tranquil sounds of the forest, away from the stench and chaos of busy human streets.

However, you have business with a certain wizard in town. So while your elven garb--decorated Fur Hood, tunic, and weapons--cause you to stand out amongst the crowd, you continue without raising a fuss. After all, they are only short-lived creatures. They don’t know any better than to stare.
