Epic Armoury's new Alaric Chainmail Hood is a flexible mail armour coif made from linked steel rings. The mail covers the head, neck and shoulders. Each butted ring interlocks with four other rings in a 4-in-1 design.

The Alaric Chainmail is mail great for heavy medieval infantry and sergeants, as well as early knights. Wear it over one of our undercaps and add a Crusader, Norman or Spangen helmet on top for the most comfort and authentic wear. The chain mail chaps "Richard" are made of spring steel, in the classic "4 in 1" braid. They are attached to a belt with wide loops and worn over the garment. This highly flexible armor hardly limits when running or fighting. Chain mail chaps are a comfortable and very effective addition to any heavy armament concept. We recommend to fix the chaps with a leather strap in the knee lightly. So the armor does not slip and the weight is distributed more evenly.

All edges are leather bound but the bottom one, and the shirt opens up in front with six brass-buckled leather straps allowing you to slip into your mail much easier, than if you had to slide it over your head. Oh no, you think, as a sword and a helmet are thrust into your farm-calloused hands. You’ve never been trained as a soldier, let alone asked to fight on a dangerous battlefield!

But here you are, suddenly standing in a row of your neighbors with your helmet secured over a padded Undercap. You await the advancing orc raid headed for your farms and your town, and you just hope that somehow you’ll make it through. At least your helmet feels solid on your head. That’s something to be thankful for, at least...right?

DETAILS

Epic Armoury’s Undercap is a padded hood that fits over the head and ears comfortably. Made from quilted cotton canvas lined with a soft polyester interior and a medium cotton outer layer, this padding can be worn on its own or as padding beneath a heavy steel or leather helmet.

The Undercap is stitched to ensure the padding will remain evenly spaced. Secure it to your head by tying the cotton cords under the chin. With its neutral style, the Undercap will work on a wide variety of characters. Match it with other Epic Armoury armours and clothes to fit your unique style!

• Used as padding under chainmail or plate armour
• Historically, a high-medieval European gambeson was recorded as being capable of stopping sword blows from penetrating the skin
• Could stop heavy arrows and mace and axe impacts with the addition of overlaying chainmail

FORGE YOUR OWN MAIL

Epic Armoury's Chainmail DIY Sheet is a sheet of chainmail, for those of you who would like to create your own mail-based gear. delivered in a square sheet, you can cut it, clip it, melt it, to your hearts content and create whatever you can imagine. You can rest assured that these chainmail sheets are of the same high quality as the ones used for our chainmails. Treated with a protective layer of oil, this should be removed before use.

The chain links are 9mm and are made from 1mm / 19 gauge mild steel.

The best defence in life means nothing if it is eaten away by time and the elements, or even attacked from the inside.
And so it is with your own armour!
Humidity, expansion and contraction in the heat, UV radiation, rain, and the withering blows of your enemies all conspire to expose your armour to rust, but worse yet, your very own precious bodily fluids conspire to corrode it from the inside with their impurities and corruption! (which is why we only ever drink pure grain alcohol or rainwater)

You could coat your armour (and other metal objects) in a regular run of the mill lubricant, but many of them are actively hydrophobic. Great for metal but terrible for leather, cotton and other organic materials!

Lanox MX4 is a lanolin rich lubricant, and lanolin is the oil that is naturally produced by sheep to prevent them from shrinking in the rain and generally remain weather proof! It is superior to many artificial compounds and does not damage leathers or organic fibres.
